Thursday night’s rematch of last year’s Western Major Baseball League between the Regina Red Sox and the Medicine Hat Mavericks lived up to more than its expectations.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Red Sox grabbed the lead courtesy of Brandon Beaudin-Herney’s RBI single to center field to score Jordan Schulz.
The Mavericks responded in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs scored by CJ DeDeaux and Bryan Arthur off Ched Gaskin’s triple.
From there, the Red Sox were the only team to score runs throughout the rest of the game. Shortstop Chase Benfield responded for the home team in the bottom of the fifth, and both Beaudin-Herney and Pier-Olivier Dostaler crossed home plate for a final score of 4-2 in favor of the Red Sox.
Red Sox pitcher Ryne Drummonds picked up his second win of the season; Andre Del Bosque picked up a save.
Mavericks Ryan Castadio was the losing pitcher.
Benfield had one run, a pair of hits and stolen bases, and one RBI.
The Red Sox and Mavericks will meet again at Currie Field on Friday, June 7, 2013. The opening pitch will be tossed at 7:05 p.m.
