An eight-run outburst in the seventh inning powered the Red Sox to a 16-8 victory over the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Monday night at Currie Field in front of 475 spectators.
The Sox sent 14 hitters to the plate in the seventh inning, combining six eights and five walks for the rally.
Griffin Keller led the Sox attack, going three-for-four with 4 RBIs, including a two-run homer in the third inning. Ryan Eastburn went three-for-five while Ivan Nunez and Rio Russell had two hits each.
Nolan Rattai went three-for-five with three RBIs while Collin Klingensmith chipped in two RBIs while going two-for-five.
Branden Redfern had a strong start for the Sox, allowing five hits and two earned runs over six innings. He had three strikeouts and walked two.
Mavericks starter Junior Pimentel took the loss. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs. He allowed seven hits while striking out 10 and walking three.
The victory improves the Sox record to 14-3 while the Mavs fall to 9-14. Game 2 of the three-game series is Tuesday night at Currie Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
