Here’s a few tidbits about the Red Sox as we head into the 2019 Western Canadian Baseball League season:
- There are five players from Regina on the active roster — Stefan Atkinson, Dylan Bells, Ben Komonosky, Caleb Lumbard and Robbie Wilkes.
- Many of the players come from schools with colourful names but Scottsdale Community College, where Grant Dowty pitched this past season, probably has the most unique — they’re called The Fighting Artichokes.
- The Red Sox pitching staff is comprised of some big men — 11 of the 15 pitchers are 6-foot-2 or taller, led by Baylor Giannini (6-foot-10), Nick Ferngren (6-foot-6), Fernando Burgos (6-foot-5) and Michael Batten (6-foot-5).
- The Red Sox have five players from the Southeastern University Fire in Lakeland, Fla. — Adam De La Cruz, Nick Ferngren, Willie Estrada, Jayden Hartle and Ivan Nunez. Southeastern, which won the 2018 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) World Series, was eliminated from the 2019 NAIA World Series on Tuesday after an 8-4 loss to Science & Arts (Okla). Southeastern finished the 2019 season with a 53-12 record and posted a 2-2 mark in the double-knockout NAIA World Series tournament.
